'In her music, you can detect influences ranging from the skittering female-centred rhythms of The Slits and The Raincoats; the bleak, bewitched emoting of Portishead's Beth Gibbons; the otherworldliness of Björk; the fire of Nina Simone, as well as more contemporary electronic sounds. There're some big names in that last sentence, and rightly, because you should expect big things from Mwen...' -
Rich Morris (Soundblab.com)

'Interesting stuff...I can't imagine anyone right now who's making songs that sound like her...'  -
Scratcha DVA (Rinse FM)

'A talent, no doubt about that...' -
Joe Muggs (Music Journalist / Blogger / Reviewer)

Gig review (oh yeah, played a gig the other day)

So clearly I forgot to mention that  I was going to play a live set this month out in East London. Well, I did...On the 14th March. I really am getting quite absent minded where this here website of mine is concerned! How shameful.

ANYWAY, the gig was great, the crowd was amazing, everyone danced and all my new songs and stuff (to be revealed online in time) went down a treat.  This is how I percieved things at the time and turns out so did a lovely reviewer in the crowd.

Here's a review I found posted about my set.  Luckily, I didn't know I was being reviewed at  the time - not sure the resulting write up would have been qutie so glowing 'cause of all that pressure and what not.
Here have a read: http://autonomymusicgroup.com/rising-mwen/

Kane FM Guestmix

It seems I've been spending a lot of my time doing guestmixes for radio shows. Can't complain really, few things make me happier than rinsing it up on the mix and sharing fresh tunes with the world.
Have a listen to a swift mix I did for the Wizard Sleeve show on Kane FM.  If you like it, click through to my Soundcloud page for the dowload : ) While you're there, you may as well help yourself to other mixes I've done in the recent past - they're all available for download.

Interview for The Blog of Wonder

First off I should probaby say Happy New Year! So it's 2012 eh? Apparently the last year of the world. Better make it a good one then!
I'd say I'm off to a good start too - I recently did an interview for an awesome blog called The Blog of Wonder.

Here check it out: http://theblogofwonder.com/2012/01/24/super-mwen/

'Super Mwen'...would it be shamelessly arrogant/ conceited/ narcissitic/ self-important/ egotistic/ audatious/ etc. to hope the nickname sticks? Yeah I just heard myself ask that... *reigns in naughty ego from trying to expand*

Mary Anne Hobbs plays out 'Bones'

The lady herself, the QUEEN of the tasteful airwaves, tastemaker extraordinaire MARY ANNE HOBBS played my track 'Bones' on her XFM show the other night.  No jokes. Here's the clip:

Bones 26-11-11 Mary Anne Hobbs XFM by Mwen

 Talk about validation!

BBC Radio 1 Airplay & Forthcoming Release

So as the above suggests would you believe I somehow cracked my way onto Radio 1 the other day!  Rob da Bank played out my track 'Bones' on his Saturday morning show (12th November) and what an exciting day it was indeed. But wait, there's more! Not only did Rob play out my track he also rated it number 3 of his 'High Fives' - top 5 recommended tracks of the week.  Not bad business for my first Radio 1 play.
Here's a clip of it:

'Bones' BBC Radio 1 12-11-11 Rob da Bank Show by Mwen

And in other news, for some reason I believe I've failed to mention till now that I recently signed to newly established dance music label OBE Records (subsidiary of Plastic Philosophy) for the release of my next EP. FYI 'Bones' will be on this EP which makes the above event even more fortuitous. I love it when things come together like that. Keep 'em peeled for a release date of the EP... x

'No Letting Go' in promo for fashion label Sorapol

A tune I wrote called 'No Letting Go' was used for this promo of newly launched Fashion Label Sorapol London. Check it out xx

'Swing Down Low' in Givenchy promo for W mag

Yep, as the title suggests my track 'Swing Down Low' was used in a W mag promo for the Givenchy spring 2012 runway show in Paris.  The video featured models Gisele Bündchen, Natalia Vodianova, Mariacarla Boscono, and Natasha Poly! Pretty awesome stuff if you ask me : )

Watch the video here: http://fashiononfilm.wmag.com/inside-w-magazine.php

Giles Deacon London Fashion Week promo

A track I wrote (which you've probably never heard) was used in a promo for Giles Deacon's show at London Fashion Week on Models.com. Good stuff if you ask me!  Check it out on Models.com here if you don't believe me  :  http://models.com/mdx/

Here's the vid though:

The track's called 'Beautiful Machines' FYI xx

More Rinse FM airplay

Yes, as the title of this news update suggestes my music has been played on Rinse FM again.  This time my track 'Swing Down Low' was played out - again on Scratcha's breakfast show.  Here's the clip:

In case you're wondering, yes Scratcha DVA did come down to my gig. In't that nice! He's a genuine fella.

Rinse FM airplay

So earlier this week (8th June) Rinse FM Dj Scratcha played out my track 'Sunstep' on his show Grimey Breakfast from my soundcloud page on recommendation from a lovely fan named Robb (thanks Robb!). Given that this track is a work in progress (and clearly marked as such!) I think it comes out relatively unscathed. Those of you that are regular listeners to Scratcha's show and know what he's like will recognise just how badly this could have turned out - Scratcha just ain't afraid to tear you down if he's not feeling your track.  I get a free radio plug for my upcoming Vibe Bar gig too - I'll take that!
Have a listen to what ensued: http://soundcloud.com/mwen/sunstep-8-06-11-rinse-fm-gmbc
Sunstep 8-06-11 Rinse FM GMBC by Mwen

The guest on the show is Joe Muggs - blogger/Reviewer/A&R man/General music head.

If you listened to the 'Sunstep' on Rinse FM clip you'll have heard Scratcha say he's played one of my tracks before. I did a bit of research and it turns out he played 'Bones' the week before.
Here's the clip: Bones 25-05 -11 Rinse FM GMBC by Mwen http://soundcloud.com/mwen/bones-25-05-11-rinse-fm-gmbc

Again I come out relatively unscathed - that's 2 for 2.  I'll take that!

Polaroid 85

Here's some very exciting news.  You may or may not know that not only am I a singer/songwriter/producer but I am also a drummer - in fact drums are my primary instrument.  I am happy to annouce that recently I have been invited to play drums for London based up and coming Jazz/electronica band Polaroid 85.  It's a great band with a great line-up and a bright future.   Between my solo stuff, collaboration projects and Polaroid 85 busy is likely to be my middle name but I wouldn't have it any other way.  Find out more about the band here: https://www.facebook.com/Polaroid85 and look out for some exciting live performance session videos, gigs, an EP re-release and various other exciting bits of news to come in the near future.

Live review & adventures in the countryside

Wow, what a couple of weeks it's been!  On Saturday the 5th of March I headed up to Leeds to headline the awsome event Riot Grrill.  Being a homecoming gig of sorts it was probably the most nerve wracking gig I've done but also one of my very best.  As it turns out one of the Soundblab crew was in the audience watching my set for a live review and what a review it was! Read the nice things he said here: http://soundblab.com/content/content/view/id/3437

The following weekend I was then invited out to the countryside by Tom Robinson of BBC6 radio for an intense weekend of songwriting with a number of very talented fellow songwriters.  Two days of non-stop creativity in a beautiful setting with the company of a very pleasant bunch and fuelled by hearty healthy organic meals is exactly the kind of thing I recommend to all musicians and songwriters!  The experience I took away from the weekend is just a bit beyond what I can describe in a simple news post so instead look out for the tracks I release in the upcoming months that I deliniate as written that weekend.  The first of these is my latest track 'Swing Down Low' which you can hear on the site wide player here or on my soundcloud and facebook page.

'Summer Solitude' featured in fashion short film

My track 'Summer Solitude' was recently used in a fashion short film featuring supermodel Anja Rubik for the uk brand Jaeger thanks to the lovely fellas of Kloss London.  Here check it out.

BBC Introducing

It appears the lovely fellas over at BBC6 Music will be playing my music on Tom Robinson's BBC Introducing show this month (December).  How very exciting!  That basically means national radio play - not bad for business!  Be sure to keep listening to Tom Robinson's show this month on DAB or stream it online via the BBC6 Music website.
